Does Daylight Saving Time Change Affect Dogs?

Posted by LINK AKC on May 05, 2018

Spring is (thankfully) fast approaching and we are all looking forward to that extra sunshine the changing season brings. It seems like everyone has a little extra pep in their step once the clock moves forward an hour  but can that change affect our canine companions? Do Dogs Actually Sweat?

Posted by LINK AKC on Apr 24, 2018

Picture this: You’re out for a run with your dog, and notice sweat has completely drenched your new workout clothes. You look down at your pup and she looks seemingly unaffected. Sure, she may be panting and walking a bit slower, but not an ounce of sweat is seen on her body. The truth is, just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean that it isn’t still happening. There are myths floating around the internet that dogs do not sweat. That is not the case. Dogs do sweat, but it is not the main way they cool themselves down when affected by heat. Unfortunately, dogs are not that well equipped at staying cool in warm temperatures. Dogs have two types of sweat glands called Merocrine glands and Apocrine glands. Merocrine glands are similar to human sweat glands and are located on your dog’s paw pads. If you look closely on a hot dry day, you may even see wet paw prints from your dog as you walk. The Apocrine sweat glands release pheromones, so their main purpose is not to release sweat! They are all over your dog’s body and help dogs identify and recognize each other.

Celebrating Hero Dogs: Meet Mirko & Haney

Posted by LINK AKC on Mar 20, 2018

Each member of our armed forces can route their journey back to a specific place where they began their military career. This place will always be special to them, as it is where they set out on a path that will shape their entire future. The same is true for our Military Working Dogs (MWDs). Their special starting place is none other than Lackland Base in San Antonio Texas, the home of the Defense Military Working Dog Program. This is where dogs arrive to begin their training in what will be a career of great importance. The first dogs were trained at Lackland in 1958. Currently there are 62 training areas with more than 1,000 dogs at various levels of advancement. The staff there is a mix of 125 men and women from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. While a majority of the dogs are brought into the facility, nearly 15% are now bred on site. The dogs are constantly training for any types of calls and deployments and live in the kennels there until their official call to active duty.

On September 28, 2006 his stepfather’s job forever changed the trajectory of Ethan’s future career choices. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Dog Handler, Deputy Matthew Williams and K9 DiOGi, colleagues of his stepfather, were tragically killed on the job. Their stories of courage and perseverance inspired Ethan that one day he too would become a dog handler in order to protect and serve his country.
